Squirrel Hill & Modern Antisemitism

Former New York Times columnist Mark Oppenheimer joined attendees for a compelling discussion on the importance of fostering strong, supportive communities in the face of rising antisemitism. Drawing on his research and personal encounters while reporting on the tragic 2018 Tree of Life synagogue shooting, Oppenheimer highlighted the remarkable resilience and solidarity of the Squirrel Hill neighborhood. He emphasized how neighbors, local organizations, and leaders came together to support one another, demonstrating the power of community in confronting hate and violence.
Throughout the session, Oppenheimer reflected on the broader lessons that Squirrel Hill offers to communities everywhere: the need for vigilance, empathy, and proactive engagement in times of crisis. Attendees were invited to ask questions, sharing their own experiences and exploring ways to strengthen communal bonds in their schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods.
Each participant received a signed copy of Oppenheimer’s book, Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood, providing a tangible reminder of the resilience, courage, and unity that can emerge even in the aftermath of tragedy. The program left a lasting impression, inspiring attendees to foster solidarity, stand against antisemitism, and cultivate a culture of support and inclusion in their own communities.
